What to know about the digital SAT

In December 2023, the pen-and-paper version of the test took its final bow, ushering in a new era of computerized testing. Whether you’re a senior stressing about college applications or a curious underclassman, here’s what you need to know about the digital SAT:

Familiar Ground, New Format

While the format has changed, some core elements remain. The digital SAT is still scored on a 400- to 1,600-point scale and covers the same general subject areas as its predecessor. Additionally, the test is still administered by proctors at official testing sites and offers the same support for students requiring accommodations, including the option to take a paper-based version if needed.

The Digital Difference

So, what’s new? Here are the key changes to be aware of:

  • Goodbye Paper, Hello Computer: Gone are the days of bubbling in ovals. The digital SAT is taken entirely on a computer.
  • Shorter and Streamlined: Say goodbye to lengthy test marathons. The digital SAT is shorter, with a combined reading and writing section.
  • Calculators All Around: Calculators are now allowed for the entire math section.
  • Shorter Passages, Sharper Focus: Reading comprehension passages are shorter and more concise in the digital format.
  • Adapting to You: The digital SAT utilizes multistage adaptive testing. This means the difficulty of the test adjusts based on your performance. Performing well on the first section of reading and writing or math will lead to more challenging questions in the second section. This creates a more personalized testing experience.

Preparing for Success

Whether you’re a digital native or more comfortable with pen and paper, the same fundamentals apply to SAT prep. Focus on building strong reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills; practice math problems regularly; and familiarize yourself with the digital format by taking practice tests offered by the College Board.

The digital SAT presents a new chapter in standardized testing. By understanding the format and continuing to hone your academic skills, you’ll be well on your way to SAT success!
