The Ultimate College Choice Checklist for Rising Seniors (and Parents!)

Choosing a college is a HUGE decision. It’s about academics, fit, and your future. To help you navigate this exciting (and sometimes stressful!) process, we’ve created a checklist of key factors to consider:

Academics
Programs: This is all about finding your passion! Research majors and minors offered by each school. Consider if they’re hands-on or more theoretical, especially for majors like engineering. Don’t forget about opportunities outside your major – explore certificates and interdisciplinary programs.

Rankings: Rankings can be helpful, but don’t get hung up on them! Look at both general rankings and those specific to your desired major (like business schools and engineering schools). And remember, strong job placement rates are a great indicator of a program’s value.

Admissions: Be strategic about your college list. Consider “reach,” “mid-range,” and “safety” schools based on your GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and the school’s selectivity. There’s more to the picture than just your stats, though, so consider the school’s acceptance rate and other factors.

Cost and Fit

Budget: Be realistic about what you can afford. Some schools offer financial aid and scholarships, so explore these options thoroughly.

Type of School: Would you thrive in a large, bustling university or prefer a smaller, close-knit college? Consider public vs. private, liberal arts vs. specialized schools, and whether a religious or secular environment is important to you.

Size: Small, medium, or large? Think about where you’ll feel most comfortable learning and living. Check the undergraduate enrollment to get a sense of the school’s size.

Faculty: Strong faculty are key to a great education. Look for a good student-faculty ratio, which indicates more personalized attention.

Location: Urban, suburban, or rural? Consider what kind of setting will inspire you to learn and explore.

Job Placement: This is a big deal! Research job placement statistics for graduates of your program. And keep in mind that schools with strong co-op programs can give you a head start in your career.

Beyond the Basics:

While these are the key factors, don’t let a too many of these be dealbreakers:

Area Around the School: What kinds of activities and entertainment are available near campus?

Campus Life: Think about student diversity, clubs you might join, and the overall vibe of the campus.

Application Requirements: Consider the application process, including essays and deadlines. Prioritize schools that fit your needs and interests.

Distance from Home: Do you want to stay close to home or venture out? This is a personal decision.

Remember, this is your journey! Take the time to research, explore your options, and create a college list that reflects your academic aspirations and personal goals.
